If your taste buds are sending out an SOS, S.O.S Chicken is here to answer the call – no rescue boat needed.
S.O.S Chicken, cheekily named, actually stands for “Stand Out Sauce”.
Located at Tampines 1 (the side facing the MRT train station), it offers a menu centred around classic charcoal-grilled chicken.
What sets it apart is the meticulous preparation of the chicken, brined for over 12 hours with a blend of 16 fresh herbs and spices.
They are then slowly roasted over charcoal and apple wood chips for a distinct smoky flavour.
The result is a chicken that captures the essence of slow cooking, packed with flavours that hit you right from the first bite.
And prices start affordably from $9.90 as well.
Whether you’re feeling adventurous or craving something familiar, there’s a flavour combination waiting to be discovered:
S.O.S Chicken ($9.90 for half chicken, $17.90 for whole chicken)
Get greeted by the sight of the chicken, plump and golden-brown, resting invitingly on a wooden board.
The crisp skin glistened, promising tender flesh beneath.
As I cut into the chicken, the knife slid through effortlessly, revealing moist, well-seasoned meat. The taste did not disappoint.
There was an immediate burst of savoury herbs, followed by a subtle, underlying sweetness from the apple wood chips.
With prices starting from S$9.90 for a half chicken, S.O.S Chicken strikes a solid balance between affordability and flavour.
Charcoal-Grilled Chicken Chop ($10.90)
If you are looking for an alternative to the signature whole chicken at S.O.S Chicken.
This dish features a grilled chicken chop that is charred just enough to bring out a smoky flavour, while still retaining its tenderness.
It comes served with crispy shoe-string fries and refreshing mesclun salad.
You can also customise the meal with your choice of one of S.O.S’s wide variety of sauces, which allows you to tailor the flavours to your liking.
S.O.S Homemade Sauces (3 for $5, 6 for $9, 9 for $12, 12 for $15)
Their variety of sauces is designed to showcase a ‘world’ of flavours. The overwhelming variety of sauces might leave you indecisive, but that’s part of the fun.
As there are too many to list, here are some which left an impression:
Garlic Chilli: Among the crowd favourites, this stands out with a punchy mix of red chilli padi, ginger, and sesame oil, delivering that local, familiar heat that’s balanced with a hint of calamansi tan.
Korean Spicy BBQ: For lovers of Korean flavours, a fiery, smoky blend of soybean oil, BBQ sauce, and chilli oil, with the heat intensified by a dash of paprika. I like this as it reminds me of Korean Fried Chicken.
Bakar: A sweet and spicy Indonesian classic with red chilli padi, kicap manis, and honey for a perfect mix of heat and sweetness.
Butter Chicken: For an Indian cuisine twist, this creamy sauce has the comforting flavours of butter, garam masala, cinnamon, and cashew coming together.
Masala: Another classic Indian-inspired sauce with a heady mix of chilli powder and onions, delivering a spicy, tangy punch. Another of my favourite.
Mushroom Cream: Earthy and creamy, with button mushrooms, thyme, and garlic blending into a smooth, rich sauce. For something safe and classic.
Coq Au Vin: Rich and savoury, this French-inspired sauce brings together the depth of red wine, garlic, and thyme for a hearty flavour.
Smoky BBQ: A classic BBQ sauce with a smoky edge, featuring the tang of tomato ketchup and the warmth of paprika. Quite addictive.
Chinese Mala: Fiery and numbing, this sauce combines dried chilli paste with broad beans, offering a mild heat-packed flavour.
Dou Jiang: Savoury with a slight tang, this sauce combines soybean paste, tomatoes, and the fresh lift of coriander for a balanced finish.
This is tough, but my top three votes will go to the Garlic Chilli, Butter Chicken, and Chinese Mala. Smoky BBQ if I can choose another.
Sides ($3 onwards)
The sides at S.O.S Chicken offer a decent variety to accompany the main dishes.
The S.O.S Brussels Sprouts ($5) are roasted to bring out their natural sweetness with a slight nutty flavour, making them a satisfying option for those who enjoy vegetables with a bit of texture.
The S.O.S Chicken Jus Potatoes ($6), on the other hand, are soft and comforting, with the chicken jus adding a saltier depth of flavour.
Lighter options like the Tofu Skin & Enoki Salad ($6) bring a refreshing Asian-tasting contrast to the richer sides. The mix of soft tofu skin and crisp enoki mushrooms has flavours which remain subtle and may suit those looking for a milder side.
Meanwhile, the Sriracha Onion Rings ($6) are addictive with their crunchy, golden batter, making them a good choice for anyone seeking something more indulgent.
For a more indulgent side, the Chicken Loaded Fries ($9.90) provides a satisfying option.
This dish piles crispy shoe-string fries high with strips of tender S.O.S Chicken, and is generously drizzled with garlic aioli and sriracha mayo.
The combination of crispy fries, creamy sauces, and savoury chicken makes it a filling, shareable snack or even a small meal on its own.
