[Ipoh] On a recent trip to Ipoh, I found myself in need of a quiet spot to relax and enjoy a good cup of coffee.
Many online searches for “best artisanal coffee in Ipoh” led me to Cold Blue Specialty Coffee.
Do note that it is tucked away on the second floor of a building, that you can easily miss if you hadn’t been looking closely.
The modest signboard doesn’t exactly shout for attention, but walking up to the entrance, I was hopeful this place was going to be a special experience.
Stepping inside, I immediately felt the calming, quiet vibes of the space.
And I loved the BLUE touches.
The minimalist, almost understated décor with blue highlights made the whole café reminded me a little of Blue Bottle Coffee.
Food wise, there is a small selection which includes bagels like the Shroom, featuring grilled mushrooms and sliced cheese (RM13), the Garlic Cream Cheese with a mix of cream cheese and garlic (RM13), the Egg Mayo with yogurt, onion, and lemon (RM11), and the Beef Bacon bagel filled with cream cheese, cheddar, and spinach (RM13).
For a more savoury-sweet option, they serve croffles, a hybrid of a croissant and waffle.
These include the Classic with banana and maple syrup (RM9), the Savory, topped with parmesan, cheddar, and chives (RM11), and the Olaf, available with vanilla, chocolate, or matcha (RM14).
As a micro-roastery, Cold Blue takes its coffee seriously, sourcing high-quality beans from around the world, including regions like Colombia, Nicaragua, and Ethiopia.
The café’s dedication to quality is evident in its use of premium equipment, such as the Mahlkönig grinders and La Marzocco espresso machines.
For black coffee, choices include Shot (RM10), Long Black (RM10), Cold Brew (RM14), and Ice Drip (RM14).
As for milk-based coffee, they serve Latte (RM12), Mocha (RM13), Dirty (RM13), and Caramel with Gula Melaka (RM13).
The coffee experience was unhurried.
When I took my first sip, I could taste the balance of flavours — bright acidity with a smooth finish.
The Honey Grapefruit (RM14) drink is refreshing and subtly sweet.
There is this light tartness of the grapefruit and the mellow honey notes. Invigorating.
On the other hand, the Lemon Pound Cake falls slightly short.
While it has a bright citrusy touch, the texture leans towards the dry side, which can detract from the overall enjoyment.
The café’s quiet atmosphere wasn’t crowded, and the view of Ipoh Padang from the window added a touch of local charm.
I spent the better part of the afternoon there, sipping on coffee, snacking on a light pastry, and watching as people came and went.
